About us
Local pest controllers serving Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and North London
Home Counties Pest Control is an independent, family-run business. We're not a franchise, not a call centre. When you phone us, you speak to someone who knows the area, knows the pest pressures specific to your postcode, and can tell you honestly what the job involves and what it will cost.
How We Started
Home Counties Pest Control was founded by Mark Davies, who grew up in Watford and has worked in pest control across Hertfordshire and North London for over fifteen years. Mark started his career with a national contractor covering the M25 corridor, eventually qualifying as an RSPH-certified technician and building up a detailed working knowledge of the pest pressures specific to this part of the country — the Victorian drainage systems under central Watford, the HMO rental concentrations in Luton and Harrow, the squirrel pressure in properties backing onto Cassiobury Park and Fairlands Valley, the particular cockroach challenges in Watford's food businesses and Harrow's restaurant quarter.
After a decade working for other companies, Mark established Home Counties Pest Control with a straightforward aim: to provide the kind of service he'd want if he were the customer. That means arriving on time, explaining what he's found and what he's doing about it in plain English, not recommending unnecessary treatments, and being honest when a problem needs a follow-up visit rather than pretending one treatment will always be enough. It also means keeping the business genuinely local — the postcodes we cover are the postcodes where Mark and his technicians actually live and work, not an optimistic radius drawn from a depot two counties away.
The business has grown steadily on the back of word-of-mouth referrals from homeowners, landlords and commercial clients across Watford, Luton, Stevenage and Harrow. We now cover all major towns in Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire, as well as the North London boroughs of Harrow and the surrounding HA postcode area. We've deliberately kept the team tight rather than expanding faster than we can maintain quality — every technician who works under the Home Counties Pest Control name is fully qualified, fully insured, and shares the same approach to how the job should be done.
How We Work
A few principles that guide every job we take on.
Survey first
We identify what's happening and why before any treatment goes down. A treatment without a proper survey is guesswork.
Plain English
We explain what we found, what we're treating, what you should expect, and what — if anything — you need to do. No jargon, no upselling.
Discreet by default
Unmarked vehicles as standard. We understand the sensitivity around pest problems in residential areas and HMOs.
Responsible use
We're CRRU-compliant on rodenticide use. We don't over-bait, we use tamper-resistant stations, and we comply with all current guidelines to protect non-target wildlife.
Honest follow-up
Some infestations resolve in one visit. Some take two or three. We tell you which category yours falls into — and we don't close a job until it's actually done.
Genuinely local
We cover the postcodes where we live and work. We know the housing stock, the commercial concentrations, the green spaces — and how they affect pest behaviour here specifically.
Our Accreditations — What They Actually Mean
Pest control is an unregulated industry in the UK — anyone can set up as a pest controller without any formal training or insurance. Accreditations and professional memberships matter, because they give you an objective basis for assessing whether a contractor meets recognised standards. Here's what each of ours means in practice.
Royal Society for Public Health — Level 2 Award in Pest Management
The RSPH Level 2 Award in Pest Management is the nationally recognised qualification for pest control technicians in the UK. It covers pest identification, biology and behaviour, the safe and legal use of rodenticides and other pesticides, integrated pest management principles, and the legislative framework within which pest controllers operate. Holding this qualification means a technician has been formally assessed against those standards — not just trained by a supplier or employer. All of our technicians hold current RSPH Level 2 certification.
BASIS PROMPT — Continuous Professional Development Register
BASIS (the British Agrochemical Standards Inspection Scheme) operates the PROMPT register as a continuing professional development scheme for pesticide users, including pest control technicians. Registration on PROMPT requires technicians to complete a minimum number of CPD hours each year and to keep their knowledge current as regulations, approved products and best practice guidelines change. It's the difference between someone who qualified once and stopped learning, and someone who maintains professional competence as the industry evolves. We maintain current PROMPT registration and can provide our registration number on request.
Voluntary Pesticide Register — Professional Standards
The PROMPT register is the voluntary register for professional pesticide users operating in the UK. It was established to demonstrate that registered practitioners work to professional standards in the safe, legal and responsible use of pesticides. For customers — particularly commercial customers who need to demonstrate pest management due diligence for food safety audits or local authority inspections — being able to verify that your pest controller is on the PROMPT register provides an additional, independently verified assurance. Our registration is current and verifiable.
Campaign for Responsible Rodenticide Use — UK Wildlife and Countryside Compliance
The Campaign for Responsible Rodenticide Use (CRRU) was established in response to evidence of secondary poisoning of raptors — barn owls, red kites, kestrels — caused by the irresponsible use of rodenticides. CRRU's UK Code of Best Practice sets out requirements for how professional pest controllers must use rodenticides: tamper-resistant bait stations, correct bait placement, regular monitoring and removal of bait when no longer needed, and the documentation of treatments. Compliance with the CRRU Code is a condition of our working practices. We are registered with Think Wildlife, the organisation that promotes and monitors CRRU compliance among pest control professionals.
Professional Liability and Public Liability Insurance
Home Counties Pest Control holds professional indemnity and public liability insurance through Simply Business, one of the UK's leading business insurance providers. Our cover includes public liability insurance to the required limit for working in domestic and commercial premises, professional indemnity cover protecting clients in the event that our advice or treatment causes damage or loss, and employer's liability where required. We can provide our certificate of insurance on request — and any contractor who can't provide one shouldn't be working in your home or business.
Our Team
All technicians working under the Home Counties Pest Control name are directly employed, fully qualified and hold current RSPH certification. We don't use subcontractors or agency staff. The person who answers your call and the person who arrives at your property work for the same business, share the same standards, and are accountable to the same principles.
