Rat Control in Watford, Luton, Stevenage & Harrow
Rats carry Weil's disease, spread through their urine, and cause serious structural damage — gnawing cables, pipework and floor joists. They are cautious animals and professionally managed bait programmes are consistently more effective than consumer products. We identify the source, treat the colony and advise on permanent exclusion.

Six Signs of a Rat Infestation
Rats are cautious and largely nocturnal, but they leave unmistakable evidence of their presence.
-
Droppings
Rat droppings are 15–20mm long, dark brown, blunt-ended. Up to 40 droppings per rat per day. Found along walls, under decking, near compost heaps and around refuse areas. Concentrated deposits indicate regular activity routes.
-
Burrows
Norway rats excavate burrows with a clean entrance hole (6–9cm diameter), often under decking, sheds, compost bins or along fence lines. Fresh excavated earth near the entrance indicates active use.
-
Runways and smear marks
Rats follow established routes and leave grease smears (sebum from their fur) on walls, pipes and fence posts. Worn tracks through grass or soil are common in garden infestations — clear evidence of a regularly used run.
-
Gnaw damage
Rats have powerful jaws and need to gnaw continuously. Damage to plastic drainpipes, food containers, wooden beams and electrical cables is common. Gnaw marks on electrical cables represent a serious and immediate fire hazard.
-
Footprints
Rat footprints are larger than mouse prints: front feet ~2cm, hind feet ~3cm. In mud or dust near burrows you may also see tail drag marks. A light dusting of flour or talc near suspected entry points can confirm activity overnight.
-
Sounds
Heavy dragging and thumping sounds in voids, ceilings or walls — notably different to the lighter sound of mice. Most active after dark; if you hear movement in the loft before midnight it is more likely rats than mice.
Our Rat Control Treatment Process
Thorough source identification, professional bait programme, and permanent exclusion advice — no shortcuts.
-
Survey and Source Identification
We assess the property and garden for active burrows, entry points and harbourage. We also assess whether a drain survey is warranted — a significant proportion of domestic rat infestations originate from defective drainage (broken drain joints provide direct access to the property from the sewer system).
-
Tamper-Resistant Bait Station Programme
Professional-grade rodenticide in locked, tamper-resistant stations placed at burrow entrances, along established runs and near entry points. Rats are neophobic (wary of new objects) so initial bait take may be slow — we account for this in our placement approach and visit schedule.
-
Follow-Up Visits
We return to check bait consumption, replenish stations and monitor burrow activity. Collapsing the burrow entrance between visits allows us to confirm whether the burrow is still active. We record all findings in writing and provide a treatment log at each visit.
-
Exclusion and Aftercare
Once activity has ceased, we provide a written exclusion report detailing all identified entry points. Entry points into the building are sealed using gnaw-resistant materials. We advise on habitat modification — removing harbourage, securing refuse — to reduce reinfestation risk from the local rat population.
Why DIY Rat Control Falls Short
Rats are cautious, intelligent animals. Consumer products and ad-hoc approaches consistently fail to eliminate a rat infestation. Here is why professional treatment is necessary.
-
Rats are neophobic — new objects cause avoidance
Rats avoid new objects in their environment for days to weeks. Placing bait stations in the wrong locations, or disturbing the area heavily during setup, can suppress bait take for weeks and give a false impression that treatment is working. Professional placement minimises disturbance and accounts for neophobia.
-
Consumer rodenticides use less potent formulations
Over-the-counter products use lower concentrations of active ingredients and require repeat feeding — which a cautious rat may not provide. Professional-grade products are often lethal in a single feed, dramatically reducing the time required to eliminate a colony.
-
The source is rarely a single rat
Garden infestations almost always involve a colony using multiple burrow entrances. Treating only the visible burrow while others remain active achieves nothing. A full survey is needed to map the colony and ensure all active burrows are included in the treatment programme.
-
Drain defects are missed without a CCTV survey
In a substantial proportion of domestic rat infestations, broken or misaligned drain joints allow rats to access the property through the drainage system. Without a CCTV drain survey, this entry route goes untreated — and the infestation recurs regardless of how thoroughly the surface is treated.
-
Reinfestation is inevitable without exclusion
If the conditions that attracted rats — refuse, compost, overgrown areas, accessible food sources — are not addressed, and entry points into the building are not sealed, the property will be reinfested from the local rat population within weeks of treatment completing.

Rat Control FAQ
Straightforward answers to the questions we hear most often.
-
Yes, potentially. Norway rats (the common UK garden rat) carry several pathogens in their urine, including Leptospira (which causes Weil's disease in humans). Weil's disease is rare but serious — symptoms include fever, muscle pain and jaundice, and it can be fatal if untreated.
Avoid direct contact with rat burrows or droppings without gloves, and wash hands thoroughly after any garden work in areas with known rat activity. If you develop flu-like symptoms after contact with rats or their environment, seek medical advice promptly.
-
Yes. This is more common than people expect. Rats swimming through the sewer system and up through the toilet U-bend is a recognised entry route, particularly in properties with older drainage or where drain joints have deteriorated.
A CCTV drain survey can identify whether your drainage system has defects that provide access. If you have found a rat inside your property with no obvious external access, drainage is one of the first things we investigate.
-
Look for clean, smooth-edged holes 6–9cm in diameter near the base of the structure, with fresh loose earth nearby. Smear marks on nearby surfaces, droppings along the fence or wall base, and sounds of movement at night are also strong indicators.
If you see a worn track through grass or soil alongside a fence line leading to the structure, this is a rat run — a reliable sign of regular activity between a burrow and a food source.
-
When a rat infestation is treated professionally, dead rats may occasionally be found in accessible locations. In wall voids, rats typically exit the harbourage area before dying — they seek water as the rodenticide takes effect and usually die outside the building or in accessible areas.
Smell from dead rats in accessible voids is temporary — usually resolving within 2–3 weeks as the body desiccates. We can advise on odour management and, where possible, access for removal.
-
Over-the-counter rat bait is available but substantially less effective than professional products. More importantly, placing rodenticide without a full survey risks targeting symptoms rather than the source of the infestation.
Domestic rat bait also raises concerns regarding secondary poisoning risk to wildlife and non-target animals. Professional treatment is safer, more reliably effective and includes the survey and exclusion work that consumer products cannot replace.
