Same-Day Response Humane Deterrents

Bird Spikes & Bird Proofing in Watford, Luton, Stevenage & Harrow

Feral pigeons, gulls and starlings cause significant damage to buildings through accumulated droppings — which erode masonry, block gutters and create a serious slip hazard — as well as noise, nesting debris and the health risks associated with dried guano. Bird spikes, netting and post-and-wire systems provide long-term deterrence without harming birds. We survey the site, specify the appropriate system for the species and location, and install to a professional standard.

Signs You Need Bird Proofing

These are the indicators that birds are causing or are likely to cause structural and health problems at your property.

  • Bird droppings on ledges, sills or rooftops

Accumulations of bird droppings on external ledges, window sills, flat roofs and signage indicate regular roosting or nesting. Pigeon and gull droppings are acidic and erode stonework, masonry and metal surfaces over time. Where volume is high, the uric acid content actively damages the substrate. Prompt installation of deterrents prevents further accumulation and structural damage.

  • Blocked gutters from nesting material

Birds nesting in gutters, parapet wall channels and flat roof outlets cause drainage blockage that can result in water ingress, structural damp and flat roof damage. A gutter blocked by nesting material in spring can cause significant water damage to the building fabric over summer and winter. Regular nesting in the same location each year indicates that proofing is needed.

  • Pigeon access beneath solar panels

The gap between solar panel arrays and the roof surface is a favoured nesting and roosting site for feral pigeons. Nesting beneath panels creates accumulated debris that blocks panel cooling airflow (reducing efficiency), dirties panels and blocks adjacent gutters. The noise of birds beneath panels can also be significant. Wire mesh exclusion systems solve the problem without affecting the panels.

  • Noise and disturbance from roosting birds

Starlings roosting in large numbers in eaves, loft voids or on roof ledges can generate significant noise — both their own calls and the scratching and movement of large numbers of birds. Pigeons on window ledges create noise and mess directly outside windows. Where birds are roosting in roof voids, their droppings accumulate on insulation and structural timbers, and can attract secondary pests.

  • Health risks from accumulated guano

Dried bird droppings carry Cryptococcus neoformans (a fungal pathogen causing cryptococcosis), Histoplasma capsulatum, Chlamydophila psittaci (psittacosis) and Salmonella. Where guano has accumulated in significant quantities — on flat roofs, in loft spaces and in ventilation systems — it represents a genuine health risk to people working or living in the building. Professional cleaning and subsequent bird proofing is the appropriate response.

  • Previous deterrents have failed

DIY bird deterrents — plastic owls, reflective tape, gel strips — consistently fail within a few weeks as birds habituate to them. If you have installed deterrents that no longer work, or have had deterrents installed previously that have deteriorated, a professional assessment of the appropriate permanent system is the next step.

What to expect

Our Bird Proofing Process

We assess the species, specify the right system for each location and install to a professional standard.

  1. Site Survey and Species Assessment

We carry out a survey of the property to assess the species involved, identify all roosting and nesting locations, assess the substrate and structural condition, and determine the most appropriate deterrent system for each location. Not all bird proofing systems are appropriate for all situations — the species, the location and the building type all influence the specification.

  2. System Specification

We specify the most appropriate system for each identified location: stainless steel bird spikes for ledges and parapet walls where pigeons or gulls are landing; heavy-duty knotted netting for large open areas where exclusion is needed; post-and-wire systems for facades, statues and heritage structures where an almost invisible deterrent is required; wire mesh exclusion for solar panels, gutters and eave voids.

  3. Professional Installation

All systems are installed using appropriate fixings for the substrate — stainless steel screws and rawl plugs into masonry, non-penetrating adhesive fixings on lead flashing and flat roofs, heavy-duty tensioned wire on specialist post systems. Work is carried out from appropriate access equipment. We provide an installation completion report with photographs.

  4. Aftercare and Inspection

We advise on inspection frequency and what to look for — nesting material accumulating behind spikes, netting damage, wire tension loss — and provide advice on any associated works required such as guano removal and cleaning before deterrent installation. For commercial clients, bird proofing inspections can be incorporated into an ongoing pest control contract.

Important to know

Why Temporary Bird Deterrents Fail

Plastic owls, reflective tape and gel deterrents are commonly tried first — and consistently fail. Here is why only physical exclusion provides lasting results.

  • Habituation makes visual and acoustic deterrents ineffective

Plastic owls, reflective tape, gel strips, ultrasonic devices and distress call speakers all suffer from the same problem: birds habituate to them within days to weeks and resume roosting nearby. There is no visual or acoustic deterrent that maintains long-term effectiveness without constant change. Only physical exclusion — preventing birds from landing — provides reliable, lasting results.

  • Incorrectly specified spikes fail

Bird spikes that are too narrow for the species using the ledge, installed too far apart, or not covering the full length of the landing surface will simply be worked around. Pigeons will squeeze onto any available space that the spikes don't cover. Professional installation specifies the correct width, spacing and coverage for the specific situation.

  • Cheap spike systems deteriorate rapidly

Low-quality plastic bird spike systems sold for DIY installation typically deteriorate within 2–3 years from UV exposure, becoming brittle and falling apart. The fixings corrode, the spike strips separate from the base, and sections fall from height — creating a hazard below. Professional-grade stainless steel spike systems installed with appropriate fixings last 10–15 years.

  • Gel deterrents create a maintenance burden and fail

Gel deterrents applied to ledges create a tacky surface birds dislike — but they accumulate dirt rapidly, lose tackiness within months, and small birds can become caught in concentrated gel, raising animal welfare concerns. They are not a substitute for a physical exclusion system and require frequent reapplication to maintain any effect.

  • Partial coverage leaves the problem unresolved

Birds displaced from one ledge will use the next available landing point on the same building. Installing spikes on one elevation while adjacent elevations, the roofline or parapet walls remain untreated simply redistributes the problem rather than solving it. A professional survey identifies all roosting points and specifies coverage that addresses the building as a whole.

Get a system that works long-term

Professional bird proofing correctly specified and installed will last 10–15 years with minimal maintenance. The cost of a professional system is typically recovered within a year when compared to the ongoing cost of guano cleaning, gutter clearance and building repair.
