Carpet beetles are a persistent problem in Watford's older housing, particularly the Victorian and Edwardian terraces across Nascot Wood, Callowland and the streets around WD17 and WD18. These properties often retain original floorboards, cornicing, and suspended timber floors with gaps between boards — all of which collect the accumulated organic debris that carpet beetle larvae feed on. The larvae, commonly called woolly bears due to their dense covering of hairs, consume keratin-containing materials: wool carpet fibres, feathers, dried pet hair, rodent nest material, and natural-fibre clothing. In older houses where these materials have built up undisturbed in loft spaces, beneath floorboards and in chimney recesses, carpet beetle populations can become very large before the damage becomes noticeable.

The most important step in any carpet beetle treatment is identifying the primary food source — the breeding focus from which the infestation is spreading. Adult carpet beetles (the small, domed beetles about 3mm long) are often first noticed on windowsills in spring, where they emerge seeking light after wintering as adults. Their presence tells us there is a larval population somewhere in the building, but the adults themselves don't cause the damage. Common breeding sites in Watford properties include: abandoned bird nests in chimney pots or behind soffit boards (which provide feathers and desiccated organic material); accumulations of pet hair under skirting boards; and wool-rich carpets in infrequently used rooms. We inspect all potential breeding sites before treatment to ensure we're targeting the source rather than just the visible symptoms.

Treatment combines insecticide application to affected carpets, floorboards, skirting boards and other infested areas with specific advice on removing or treating the breeding source.
