Luton's Drainage Network and Why Rats Keep Coming Back

Much of Luton's drainage infrastructure in LU1 and LU2 — particularly in the older residential streets of High Town, New Town, Bury Park and the streets running south of the town centre — was laid in clay pipe in the early-to-mid twentieth century. Clay pipes crack, root-infiltrate and develop joint failures over decades; rats exploit these defects to access surface territory through inspection chamber lids and drain entry points at ground level. Surface bait stations bring pressure down but can't resolve an infestation where rats are continuously emerging from a drain defect.

The River Lea and its tributaries run through and alongside large parts of Luton — from Wardown Park south through the Lea Valley. Rats along watercourses are a persistent source of surface pressure on adjacent residential and commercial properties. Properties backing onto the Lea valley green corridor in LU3 and LU4 are particularly exposed; a good-condition drainage system and fully proofed building envelope is the only long-term defence.

When we suspect a drain defect is driving an infestation — based on signs like burrows near drain covers, rat activity in sub-floor voids that persists despite surface baiting, or the pattern of ingress points — we can arrange a CCTV drain survey. The survey identifies specific defects and their location, allowing a drain contractor to make targeted repairs. We provide a report to the householder and, if required, to their insurer or local authority.

How We Treat Rats in Luton

   Survey and activity assessment

   We inspect exterior and interior, drainage infrastructure, sub-floor voids, garden and perimeter. We identify rat runs, burrows, entry points and whether drain investigation is indicated.

   Tamper-resistant bait stations

   Placed at active run locations along walls, near burrows, under decking, at drain covers. CRRU-compliant second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides in locked stations, checked at follow-up.

   CCTV drain survey (where indicated)

   Camera inspection of drainage to identify collapse, joint failure or root intrusion that rats are using. Report provided with recommendations for repair.

   Proofing and follow-up

   We seal confirmed entry points with materials matched to the structure. Follow-up visit to assess bait take-up, confirm resolution and advise on drainage repair priority.
